this collection evokes the organic, the messy, the simultaneously sensitive and resilient nature of aliveness. each artist presents a nuanced softness, illuminating the horror of being seen: the hidden corners of the self, the rotten parts we may try to conceal or forget. in the garden, we make space for shadows, composting & metabolizing the rotten into the lush – turning inside out and allowing the moon to illuminate the tender process.
midnight garden features artwork from members of Holding Space, an artist collective making poetry out of anything and creating room to bloom in the dark.
the exhibition, on view at chicory naturalist, has room to grow and expand throughout the summer: adding new work and reconfiguring existing pieces.

“Goblin Scrapbook” is a little project that brings together a whole bunch of mediums. Dabbling in photography, sewing, book binding, paper making, poetry, and collecting trinkets into one big book that reminds me of something you’d find on a shelf in an old goblin hut. Messy and unrefined but with intention. Perfect imperfection.

Pinky’s Flowers
Naomi “Pinky” Allen (1938-2019) was a wonderful artist, a fantastic mother and a delightful nana. She inspired her grandchildren to pick up books based on the illustrations, to appreciate the small things, to read outloud to loved ones (and do the voices obviously),and to be unapologetically yourself even when she didn’t approve. She didn’t start painting until she was 30 years old despite being born into an artist family but once she did she was prolific until she got sick at age 71. She was always in her art studio with a glass of wine, a menthol moor cigarette, and whichever little maltese dog she had rescued at the time. She talked about having her work up in a gallery but was never confident that people would be receptive to her art because she was self taught despite everyone adoring everything she made. Her biggest inspirations were Georgia O’Keefe, her personal garden, and the people she met on her many travels over the years that she would craft amazing oil pastel portraits of. This work is just one of the many beautiful pieces she did of her favorite subject.
